An Architect's Study

A studio/gallery for an architect of my choice in the back yard of a North East D.C. row home.

I chose to design for Mies van der Rohe to celebrate his use of horizon, mid-century style, and willingness to expose the building's supporting structure

All drawings are by hand

Marker on Vellum

The yard was 80x26ft and could be used in any way I wished. The structure had to be two levels and must be inspired by the represented architect. My study is inspired by the Barcelona Pavilion, and the Farnsworth House

Elevations, Floor Plan, and Section

This was my first endeavor into hand drawing and model building from scratch. It was an amazing experience, and I learned a great deal. I enjoyed working on a multimedium model and had fun learning how to handle the materials. I learned a great deal about detail work and have many new ideas for my next projects

Model

1/4in=1ft model of museum board and balsa wood depicting the study for Mies van der Rohe

Process Orthographic Projection

This is my first draft of the final design. I wanted to get a feel for how the structure would fit within the confines of the property

Initial Indoor View

Once I had the floor plan complete I wanted to visualize what it would look like from the inside. These are two opposite views on the first floor, one from the front of the building and the other from the rear
