Edgewood Synagogue

Edgewood Synagogue is located at 616 Rhode Island Ave, NE Washington D.C. It is a repurposed site that is conveniently located in the revitalized Edgewood neighborhood. A central part of the new mixed use development along Rhode Island Ave, and close to the Brentwood Metro Station and the Metropolitan Bicycle Path.

The Synagogue is designed around the main worship space, which according to Jewish tradition, faces the congregation east toward Israel, lending to its unique design. The worship space is shaped with acoustics in mind, allowing the voice to be easily carried so no matter where you sit you will hear clearly.

Large tinted windows in the chapel allow for ample natural lighting, while reducing glare and excess heat exchange.

Below the chapel is a community center which includes classrooms, kosher kitchens, and gathering spaces for the congregation.

Edgewood Synagogue is designed around the main worship space. These early sketches of space and sizing eventually evolved into the finished product which sits facing east, toward Israel. The initial basic rectangle morphed into a complex, but tasteful shape that allows for ample natural light on every floor of the building.
